Minding Your Ss and Qs
Slow, slow, quick, quick slow … Victor Sylvester strikes up his orchestra and couples take to the floor in a glitter of sequins. Well there were no sequins, but there were some pretty shoes and plenty of enthusiastic couples gathered to continue their education in the foxtrot and learn the basics of the tango.

Slow, slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, slow … reverse turn … outside your partner – a step to the outside - three steps to the inside. Angela and her dance partner Patrick demonstrated steps of the foxtrot. The couples, clearly understanding every word, followed, then walked back to the top of the room and danced down repeatedly.

Getting back up the room by dancing was the next section and within an hour couples were moving around the floor polishing newly acquired steps. “Shall we have a break?” “No! More music!”

After the break, in which some enthusiasts did some sneaky practicing out in the corridor, came the excitement of the Tango. Now for something new! First the hold: “A closer hold than the foxtrot; tuck you partner under your arm gentlemen. Turn in your left wrist. Knees flexed. Smooth movement, no rise and fall.” Then, the first steps – slow, slow quick, quick, lunge to the right! And in no time everyone was lunging with abandon.

Before the close, steps to get you down the floor had been conquered. How to get back is for another day.

A flurry of wind-down quickstep and everyone leaves for the murk of a February night. The enthusiasm and skill, and the obvious enjoyment, made it a night worth turning out for.
